Today we’ve got another travel riddle for ya! “The more you take, the more you leave behind”
This one seems to be a bit easier than the other travel riddle I shared not long ago. What do you, do you have a clear answer already? If yes, then scroll down for the reveal!
*DRUM ROLL PLEASE*
The Answer is: FOOTSTEPS
Riddle Answer Explained:
Most of us, when thinking of this word “take“, we automatically associate it with “physically retrieving something“. For example, “taking” a candy bar from your sister, or “taking” money from your wallet.
So for non-native English speakers, this riddle might not be as intuitive and straight-forward as it seems. Instead of “taking” a step, “walking” a step kind of makes more sense when translated from foreign languages.
And so if you got this riddle wrong, and English is not your first language. Don’t be so hard on yourself. English is weird anyway. Haha!
So the overall explanation is: The more footsteps you take, the more footsteps you leave behind. Which lowkey doesn’t really make a lot of sense. Since the thing you’re leaving behind when taking a footstep is actually footprints. Footsteps imply action, whereas footprints are the physical manifestation of taking a footstep. So I wouldn’t say that the words “footprints” and “footsteps” are interchangeable. Does that make sense at all? If not, don’t worry about it, I might just be overthinking this.
Alternative Answers To “The More You Take, The More You Leave Behind”
I believe that there’s always more than one possible answer for every riddle. So if your answer doesn’t match the “correct” answer above, check out some of these quite creative and funny alternative answers I found on Quora and Reddit!
- Laundry. Because the more laundry you try to take at one go, the more socks you drop
- Anything valuable, technically, if you die
- Time
- Laxatives
- Chances. Paths taken necessitate other paths being left behind
- Polaroid Pictures
- Alcohol, the more you drink, the more you vomit
- Dumps
- Notes. The more notes you take, the more handwriting you leave behind
Did your answer appear on this list? If it did, I applaud you for your creativity! What makes riddles super fun is the huge variety of reasonable answers that people come up with. It just goes to show how creative we are. Love it. My favorite alternative answer is the laundry one. It truly resonates with me on a personal level. (I always drop a bunch of socks and underwear when I try to take all my laundry in one go)
And if your answer didn’t appear on this list, but you think that it deserves some attention and spotlight. Please leave your answer in the comments below. Maybe I’ll add it to this list of alternative answers!

Take More Footsteps!
Apart from footprints. The more footsteps we take, the more memories and experiences we leave behind.
The more places and countries we travel to, the more unforgettable memories and life-changing moments we get to experience. Personally, after traveling solo to different parts of the world, I realized how beneficial travel was in terms of opening up my world view and expanding my horizons.
I don’t mean to get so deep. But here we go.
Life is a beautiful journey where we get to live out our wildest dreams, venture into the unknown, and learn as much as we can about the human experience. By taking more footsteps, meeting people from around the world, and experiencing what this world has to offer. We can take advantage of our limited-time here on planet earth. And hopefully, the only thing we leave behind at the end of this journey is memories and footsteps, not unfulfilled dreams.
Thanks for bearing with me, and my unsolicited TED talk speech right there.
Bye! Hope you enjoyed this travel riddle! xoxo
