Some of us can be apprehensive about traveling sometimes. “The world is a dangerous place!“, they say; “That country is super sketchy and you might get kidnapped“, they say. The media has portrayed many parts of the world as a dangerous territory that we should never dare set our foot on. But is that really true? Today, I want to share with you some of the most inspiring Ted talks I’ve come across on Youtube to show you the benefits and life-changing aspects of travel. And maybe, after watching these talks, you’ll also be inspired to step out of your comfort zone and take on this beautiful adventure called life.
After immigrating with his parents from Mexico to the United States. Luis started to feel the urge to travel the world after having his horizon expanded. In his ted talk, he emphasized the importance of traveling more and buying less. In the United States, a capitalistic nation that values wealth and consumption. The importance of “enriching experiences” seems to be overlooked. People seem to have equated the accumulation of wealth and power with the level of happiness. However, Luis is here to debunk that viewpoint. And show us that a life well-lived is a life full of crazy, breath-taking, and memorable experiences.
“One is reminded, at a level deeper than all words, how making a living and making life sometimes point in opposite directions”-Pico Iyer
When asked, “what to do you regret the most in life”. With no surprise, the majority of people reply with “I regret not traveling more”. But why is it that even though we know that traveling is good for the soul. We still don’t do it!?
Robin Esrock was involved in a biking accident years ago that left him with a $20,000 insurance settlement. With this chunk of money. He packed all of his belongings and set off on a one-year backpacking around 24 countries. After exposing himself to different cultures around the world, he gained invaluable perspective on this world we live in. He realized that our lives are mitigated by routines and governed by mindless habits. This is one of the most inspiring ted talks that will inspire you to get off the couch and go see the world.
“Wherever you are, is where you are supposed to be”-Robin Esrock
We tend to find excuses to avoid doing the things we’re afraid of. For example, traveling the world. Most of us have the preconception that you need to have loads of money saved up before you can have the privilege to explore. However, Tomislav, a travel writer from Croatia, is here to prove us wrong. After losing his job due to the financial crisis in 2008, Tomislav decided to embark on an adventure around the world even though he was dead broke. He hitchhiked, couch-surfed, volunteered, and worked abroad to pay for all his expenses. I think his story is a great motivation for all aspiring-travelers around the world.
“You don’t have to be brave to travel. You just need a little bit of courage to start, to leave.”-Tomislav Perko
Ginger is like most of us travel addicts, she aspires to live full of adventure and refuses to settle for a routine and bland life. One of her most important points in this Ted talk is the ability the maintain a traveler’s mindset even when you’re not traveling. With three simple questions, she found a way to become more open-minded, adventure-seeking, and courageous. She talked to strangers in her hometown and built deeper connections with those around her. She shows us that we can find happiness, adventure, and connection anywhere and everywhere, as long as we have a “traveler’s mindset”.
“Happiness, adventure, connection, is all right where we are”-Ginger Kern
Last but not least, out of all the inspiring Ted talks I’ve shared, this one has to be one of my Top 3. His experiences resonated so much with me, and is also why I’ve decided to pursue a life full of travel and adventures. Matthew urges us to follow our intuition, follow our dreams, and say “yes” to those moments where it feels right. Pause throughout the video and really reflect on some of the points he makes. Think about your life, and what kind of story you want to live out. Always remember, you have the power to write your own narrative, and never let others take that privilege away from you.
“When we view our life as an interesting story, it has no other choice than to become one.”-Matthew Trinetti
Why Travel? Because Travel Is A Way Of Life
Don’t wait for the right moment to travel, because the more you wait, the less likely you’ll feel the need to do it. I set out on all my most amazing adventures by not hesitating and just doing. Sometimes we second-doubt ourselves and wonder if we’re making the right decision. But just like Robin Esrock said, “You have to believe that whatever decision you make, is the best decision you can possibly make”!
